Jonah: The Reluctant Prophet

June 18 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

We’re gathering in person! Plan to join together!

The theme of our event will take the sometimes-overlooked comedic nature of Jonah’s journey as it is reflected in the sacred text, and the spiritual elements rooted in our Illuman tradition concerning Jonah.  We will experience and celebrate this in the ritual created by Convener Mark Infusino. Teaching elder Matt Hardin will develop the ideas of what Jonah really got wrong, and how that applies to us today. Teaching elder Steven Gutierrez-Kovner brings it home, giving life to theological application of being in the belly of the whale.

We look forward to Matt and Steven to help our council work to bring it home to everyone today, and celebrate it in ritual:

Jonah runs from God → Jonah runs to God → Jonah runs with God → Jonah runs against God.

This is not a bible study, but you may wish to read in advance the four very short chapters of the book Jonah in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament).
What to Bring:
  • Chair
  • Drum (or other rhythm instrument)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Hat or cap
  • Sunscreen
  • Journal and writing implement
  • A male friend or relative 18 years or older
  • In keeping with COVID protocols, it is recommended that unvaccinated individuals wear a mask

Lunch will be provided after the program

Your free will offering of $20, or whatever you can give, will be helpful, but not required! This supports the work of Illuman SoCal.
